Family Bucket List 18 for 2018

Family Bucket List 18 for 2018
Building stronger connections whilst having fun

Yes, it is that time of year when everyone is setting intentions, resolutions and goals. I’m not a fan of New Years Resolutions but I do like a solid bucket list. If you are setting resolutions, check out my post on habit setting so that you have more success.

.

One thing that we do is to have a family bucket list and this year we are doing 18 things for 2018. It has taken a good week to pull the list together but what I like about this idea is that you can make it completely unique to you and your family.

.

We have a couple of biggies, some things that are a bit of a no-brainer, some will take some planning and some we will have to save for but most importantly they are all things we enjoy doing as a family.

.

The advantage of this is having united goals that you can all work towards, which makes it easier to explain to the kids about things like money if we want to do X we need to save some money so lets… have a garage sale, put some money aside each week etc. It helps with family decision making and talking through real issues.

.

It also helps kids feel like part of the family, they can be a part of the decision process and part of the solution. And of course, anything, where you are working towards a common cause, helps build relationships and connection.

.

And finally, having something to look forward to and plan for helps get through the rough spots.

.

So here is our bucket list – 18 for 2018, I hope it inspires you to make one too, if it does let me know, share what yours looks like over in Moms That Rock.

.

In no specific order…

.

ONE

Watch 4 movies at the movie theatre. I think this one will be easy, and since we have already seen Star Wars, we are off to a good start!

.

TWO

Spend Christmas and New years in Italy. This is the biggie and will take a lot of planning (and money) but it would be a brilliant way to finish off the year and one that we are all excited about!

.

THREE

Stay overnight in a new prefecture. This is basically an excuse for a weekend break but by putting the new prefecture in the mix will make it a bit more fun, we will also have to travel a bit to do this since we have done all the local prefectures!

.

FOUR

Learn how to make nikuman (steamed dumplings), this one shouldn’t be too hard… famous last words!

,

FIVE

Try 5 new kinds of cheese. We all love cheese but good cheese is hard to come by in Japan, I did put down a cheese a month to start with but we decided it might be difficult to find 12 new kinds of cheese so we cut it back to five. There is no rule on doing more!

.

SIX

Have a monthly games night. Ebi-kun and I do this quite often but it is more difficult to do with my husband too because he gets back so late, so it might have to be a games afternoon when we can, sounds like one of the easier ones but I think in reality it might be one of the harder ones!

.

SEVEN

Visit Universal Studios. Crazy as it sounds, we have never been to USJ or Disney, when we talked about it, everyone preferred USJ. It’s down in Osaka so maybe we can work it in with a trip to see the in-laws.

.

EIGHT

Take a family photo every month (doing something fun). This came about because when we came to make the New Years cards this year we didn’t have any decent family shots to choose from.

We are already on track and January is in the bag…

.

skiing at nakazato niigata japan

.

NINE

Try 6 new pancake recipes. We have pancakes every weekend so I don’t think this is too much of a stretch and it’s a good excuse to mix things up a bit!

.

TEN

Go snorkelling/skin diving. This is a biggie for me because I’m not a fan of water, we did go snorkelling last year and my husband used to scuba dive. The boy really wants to go again so I reluctantly agreed but I will leave the skin diving to them. This is the only item which isn’t 100% a family bucket list item but I’m hapy to go and prop up the bar when they go off diving s that is a win if you ask me!

.

ELEVEN

Go to 3 new ski resorts. We have already checked one off the list so we are already 1/3 through this one!

.

TWELVE

Try a new cafe every month. Cafe hunting is one of my guilty pleasures and we are fortunate to live somewhere that has a lot of great indie cafes scattered about so I think this one will be a breeze. We have already got done one so we are off to a good start.

.

THIRTEEN

Visit Yayoi Kusuma’s new art gallery in Tokyo. We weren’t able to get tickets when it first opened but we should be able to now, good for one of the random days off school or national holidays.

.

FOURTEEN

Learn how to toss pizza. We have homemade pizza almost every weekend but I still can’t do that whole flinging pizza dough base thing, this year I will master this!

.

FIFTEEN

Meditate daily. We all like meditating and feel the benefits of it so we want to be a bit more consistent. Both Ebi-kun and myself meditate in the bath – which is perfect because there are no distractions!

.

SIXTEEN

Reduce the amount of plastic we use. Plastic waste is an absolute nightmare in Japan, everything is wrapped in 16 layers of the stuff, not quite but it feels like that and our plastic waste is more than anything else. So we will try our hardest to reduce this as much as possible, being more consistent about taking water bottles out with us is a good start!

.

SEVENTEEN

Do an escape room. These have just started popping up in Tokyo and look like great fun!

.

EIGHTEEN

Watch a sunset and a sunrise altogether. We have done sunsets before but I don’t think we have all been together for a sunrise, so that should be good! And that just about wraps up our family bucket list for this year.

.

If you prefer to do your own 18 for 2018, then last years list 17 for 2017 might be inspiring for you.

Of course, a lot of these things will cost money in one form or another, what better way to fund your family bucket list than with a passive income stream!
