Can You Mix Dr Who with Montessori?

I know, I know, there are going to be some Montessorians up in arms about this but hear me out…
.
One of the key philosophies for Montessori education is “Follow The Child” and I deeply believe in this concept, I also think us adults could take a lesson from this too, I know a lot of adults who would be happier humans if they did!
.
So, what has this got to do with Dr Who? Over the years I have paid close interest in what lights my son up, what captures his imagination, what he’s in love with. Sometimes I haven’t been a big fan, especially some of the influences from school friends that don’t fall in line with my preferred ideals but I’ve always trusted that it will work out in the end.
.
And yes, often I encourage these fads. I find books or games, projects or crafts related to whatever the latest trend might be. We have explored the Bahamas from the comfort of our living room, built spaceships, dissected flowers, studied dinosaurs. You get the picture. Some of these topics hold his interest for weeks, even months, others are a fleeting interest that only capture his imagination for a few days.
.
Which brings us round to the latest craze, Dr Who! Now, I loved Dr Who as a kid, it was exciting and just scary enough, it opened up my imagination to all kinds of adventure, time travel, where would I go, what kind of story would I end up in. So when Ebi-kun watched the first episode with Matt Smith (yeah we are behind the times here in Japan) he was HOOKED.
.
We don’t watch a lot of TV and I prefer him to watch in English as that is our minority language so finding something he is excited about which isn’t some crap Japanese animation means I am happy too. The trick then was to follow this passion and combine it with something I want him to do… in this case, more creative writing.

The Dr Who Story Writing Kit Was Born

Ebi-kun goes to Japanese school he doesn’t get as much writing in English that I feel is necessary to keep his level age appropriate. Reading we have no problem with because he devours books like they are going out of fashion.
.
The kit is basically a story writing or episode writing exercise. The first page has some prompts to help with the outline, there is a page to draw a scene from the episode and then a couple of writing pages. The cover for our book, I made using google images and photoshopped Ebi-kun onto the front (the image isn’t included as it’s not mine to distribute but you can easily put one together, even using a magazine image and a photo of your child – the old school, paper and glue way!
.
Because Ebi-kun is excited about Dr Who at the moment, he is excited about writing the stories, which is the whole point of the exercise! By using the Montessori philosophy of following the child and mixing it with the child’s needs it’s easily possible to get the results.
.
He is still excited and loving learning which is a win as far as I am concerned. Pushing text books and tests on to the child is only going to result in a lack of passion and in some cases the child rebelling against learning, the opposite effect of what we are trying to achieve.
.
As far as I’m aware Dr Who and Dr Montessori never met (although I might have missed that episode), I wonder what they would have made of each other if they did?
