Self care is one of those things we, as moms, tend to put on the back burner, it gets pushed down to the bottom of the to-do list because washing the dishes and doing the laundry is far more important right?
.
Yep – when you look at it like that, you know it’s all wrong!

1.
Go for a walk, a meander, take in the neighbourhood, walk down a street you don’t usually go down, explore.
.
What can you hear, smell, see? If you have little ones, pop them in the carrier or pushchair and ask them the same questions. Don’t make it a walk to get from point A to point B, make it a walk for the sake of walking.
.
I didn’t have a pushchair when Ebi-kun was a baby so when it was nap time I would pop him in the carrier and go and explore the neighbourhood. It’s actually good exercise too, carrying a chunky baby on your back for 30 minutes or more!
2.
Put your feet up. Declare to anyone within earshot that you are taking a break.
.
Sit down and physically put your feet up. You could push the boat out and include a cup of tea or glass of wine with this (depending on the time of day!).
.
Legally, if you are working you entitled to a 20 minute rest break if you work more than 6 hours – use those rights at home too!
3.
Do your hair & make-up OK mamas, hands up, who is guilty of just tying your hair up and sometimes it not even seeing a brush, let alone shampoo?
.
Yep, guilty as charged, I have certainly done it in those zombie mom days, just don’t make it a habit.
.
Seriously, is life really so busy you can’t take 5 minutes to fix your hair properly?
.
And what kind of example are you setting for your kids? Mamas don’t have time to look after themselves? We don’t want that, so get that hair brush out!
4.
Book An Appointment. To see your hairdresser, without the kids in tow! Getting your hair done professionally makes you feel fabulous, there is nothing better than coming out of the hairdressers with freshly coiffed hair!
.
Plus if you feel good it has a knock on effect for the rest of the family, and your other half will notice that you feel happier too.
5.
Pump Up The Volume. I believe self care is about feeling good inside, what better way for an instant recharge than to whack some tunes on and dance like nobody’s watching.
.
This is my personal favourite and in fact I often have an international dance off over skype with my best buddy Di who is in the UK.
.
Science backs this one too, those feel good endorphins are released when you shaka-that-bootie!

6.

Call Up A Friend. Like I said, self-care is all about how you feel on the inside.

Being disconnected from our friends can bring you down, yes, we can see what they are up to on Facebook, that they had apple pie for lunch and their toddler decorated the sofa with bum cream but it lacks real communication.
.
So pick up the phone or hop on skype and have a real adult chat (bonus points if it’s not about kids!)

7.
Get A Massage. As I see it there are three ways to do this.
.
1. Book in a professional massage, highly recommended if possible.
.
2. Coerce your other half into giving you one or at least a back rub, you can do the same for them, the physical connection and downtime is great too.
.
3. Talk your kids into doing it, this might be asking for trouble… but find a toy car with nice wheels and tell your child to use your back as if it’s the hills or mountains.* Ask them to make up a story with the cars driving over your back. Lie face down and relax….
.
*make sure your hair is tied out of the way!
8.
Have A Drink.
.
When you make a cuppa, do it with purpose, pay attention to what you are doing, enjoy the process then when you sit down, take the time to really enjoy the drink.
.
This goes for a glass of wine or whatever your drink of choice is. Don’t throw it down your neck as another way to get through the day, stop and appreciate it.
9.
Meditate.
.
Before you start rolling your eyes, I’m not talking about sitting under a tree crossed legged Ohmmming for hours.
.
Just a few minutes of sitting still and concentrating on your breathing can bring you back to centre. I personally like to mediate in the bath because I know distractions are at a minimum. There are lots of apps and downloads you can get for mediating too, I talked about Omvana, the one I like to use here.
10.
Indulge.
.
In what? In anything that fills you up.
.
Good quality chocolate, a Johnny Depp film, a bouquet of flowers, organic fruit, lunch at a favourite restaurant, a mani/pedi or a long soak in a bubble bath.
.
The what isn’t important, it’s the feeling you get from pampering yourself and showing your body that you are worth it that is.
.

I know moms tend to slack off when it comes to self care, so we have a whole section dedicated to it in My Organized Chaos.
.
Being organized isn’t just about paying the bills on time and getting the kids on the school bus in the morning, it’s about freeing up time to look after yourself and enjoy life!
.
And self care isn’t something we should be ‘treating’ ourselves with, we should be doing it on a daily basis, making it a priority because really, folding laundry is NOT more important than looking after ourselves properly.
