Almost everyone I know wishes they had more hours in a day and many don’t really need it, they just need to be a bit more time savvy. So here are 10 genius ways you can start creating more time and making your quality of life better – less stress and more chill time, sounds good?

I don’t expect everyone to dive in and use all of them at one, it would be too overwhelming, try one or two that you resonate then come back for more when you have the first couple down!

It doesn’t have to be perfect, you don’t need fancy equipment, just start, now, well as soon as you finish reading!

Create A Weekly Meal Plan

In our busy daily life we all suffer from decision fatigue and if you are responsible for preparing the families meals then that is a whole lot of decisions right there!

To cut down on the number of decisions and the noise in your head, even the simplest of meals plans can make a difference. Even something as basic as a list of the 7 main meals you will eat during the week is a start!
.
The health coaches out there will tell you that deciding your meals ahead of time will help you make healthier choices, rather than reaching for the Take-Out menu when you discover there is nothing left in the fridge!

Make Your Bed!

What? No, I’m not your mom!

So why am I telling you to make your bed?
Because gorgeous, I want you to have a super productive day and making your bed has been proven to boost productivity!

You see… the army use this technique so that you start the day on a positive step – as soon as you leave your bedroom you have already checked off something useful on your to-do list, you have already accomplished something. It is a teeny-tiny mind hack that actually works.
.
Admiral William H McRaven even wrote a New York Times bestseller on the subject, so you don’t have to just take my word for it.
.
Plus it’s so much nicer to crawl into a bed that’s be made rather than to have to fight the bedsheets when you are tired!
.

Tidy your desk
.
5 minute productivity hacks rock and this one is probably one of the most effective out there!
.
When you are wrapping up for the day, plan to finish your work 5 minutes early then just take those 5 minutes to tidy up your desk or workspace.
.
Chuck away any rubbish, clear away anything that you have finished with for the day and put away anything you have had out that you don’t need on the desk all the time.
.
Keep a notebook of things that you need to do the next day, on the desk, so you can jump straight in when you start the next day.
.
You might be one of the creative people who like to work in a creative ‘mess’ – come on, you know what I mean! But for our brains, looking at all that when we are just starting the day can send our poor brain into overwhelm. So even if you have a project on the go, just tidy up a bit so you can easily pick up from where you left off.
.

I have a caddy similar to this one (mine is actually from Muji) which works a treat and if I decide to work somewhere else in the house, it’s easy to take all the things I use on a regular basis with me. But it doesn’t have to be a caddy, any type of desk tidy will do.

Clean The Sink

I Know many people will rebel against this idea but hear me out…
.
I want you to imagine you go to bed, tired, been a busy day, you can’t be bothered with the washing up the dishes, you kid yourself that the saucepan needs to soak overnight. You’ll deal with it in the morning.
.
You have a good night sleep, you wake up feeling rested and ready for the day, you walk into the kitchen and see the piles of dirty dishes. How does that feel? Does that ‘Ready to tackle the world’ feeling that you had 2 minutes ago suddenly take a kick to the gut. Yup.
.
Now, let’s try again. This time you are tired, it’s been a hard day but you grit your teeth and deal with the dirty dishes, didn’t take that long after all. You wake up feeling rested and ready for the day, walk into the kitchen and you can almost smell that cup of coffee before it’s even brewed…
.
That tiny tweak of when you tackle a crappy job can make a HUGE difference in your mood and attitude to the day.

The 2 Minute Rule
.
I LOVE this hack because it’s so easy to apply and you can do it with anything from dealing with paperwork from school to answering emails to sorting out chaos in your kitchen drawers.
.
So the rule is: If it will take less than 2 minutes, deal with it now.
.
Often we think jobs will take us much longer than they actually do so we put them off, or to be blunt, we are just lazy-arses and tell ourselves that we’ll do it later.
.
Once you get into the habit of doing the 2-minute rule you’ll find you magically have more time, you are suddenly more organized and you are less stressed because all those little jobs you had in your head have been taken care of – not bad side effects!
.

Use this 2 letter word

Toddlers rock at this, so why do we have such a problem?

Have you ever said yes to something then wished you had said no?
.
Generally, we are people pleasers – especially women so breaking this habit and replacing it with a new one will get you out of doing all those boring commitments that you didn’t want to do in the first place!

.
Saying no outright can feel uncomfortable, especially if you are a giver and people pleaser by nature. So try this little trick instead, when you are asked to do something, attend an event, babysit, organise something, take a voluntary position – whatever. Instead of saying yes, say “I’ll check my schedule and get back to you” or something similar.
.
This gives you a buffer, some thinking time if you like.
.
Once you have time to think about the request without the pressure of having somebody in your face you can decide whether it does or doesn’t fit your needs or if you have time. Will it distract you from your goals? Is it something you REALLY want to do? If not, you can get back to the person asking and tell them that you are sorry but you don’t have time, it doesn’t work for you right now.
.
Be sure to thank them for asking though!
.
Since implementing this rule I no longer spend my time doing stuff I don’t want to do and when I get involved I give it my all because I do have the time and I’m not feeling all grumbly and pissed off because I got badgered into it. Like Marie Forleo says, just get on the No Train!
.

Get Focused
.
Do you ever start a job and then end up bouncing from one task to another then you end the day with none of them completed?
.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone but if you are serious about getting shit done you need to STOP and focus on one thing at a time.
.
This is an important skill to be teaching our kids too. Having seven things on the go at once often means that the job in hand doesn’t get completed or it’s not done to the highest standard you could do it – yes perfectionists out there, multi-tasking is screwing with your superpowers!
.
OK… so what you need to do is… DECIDE what it is you are going to work on, get super specific!
.
Write it down, don’t knock the power of the pen to paper!
.
Now turn off all distractions, close any windows that are not relevant – yes, that includes Facebook and Twitter!
.
If you have kids underfoot, challenge them not to interrupt for a set amount of time, even set a timer to keep them out of your hair!
.
Make sure all notifications are turned off (this should be your default setting anyway), get yourself a drink, take a pee, and set yourself a short-term deadline. You might be working on a big project but what can you get finished in 30minutes focused work?
.
Start doing this and your productivity will shoot through the roof.

Big Job Before Lunch
.
I think a lot of us suffer from the afternoon slump, the Italians are onto something with the siesta idea! Shame that most of us don’t have a schedule that fits with the siesta.
.
If you are trying to be more productive then schedule your big job of the day to do before lunch, you will get through it much quicker and you are less likely to put it off if you do it earlier in the day.
.
PLUS… think about how you feel when you have got the worst or hardest job out of the way, it’s like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders and you want to run up and down the street dressed like a rainbow unicorn… or is that just me?
.
If you do that big job earlier in the day, not only do you get it out of the way and done quicker – you also feel more energised to tackle the rest of your jobs! Whoop!
.

Drink up!

NO! not the beer, not until you’ve done your work!
.
A 2013 study conducted by the University of East London showed that the simple addition of drinking more water can result in a 14% increase in productivity!
.
Researchers found that a person’s brain is better to focus if properly hydrated.
.
I think most of us know that we don’t drink enough (water) and many of us that work at a computer don’t move about often enough.
.
This is my cheeky little trick to kill both birds with one stone see, still being lazy!
Take a large glass of water to your desk and aim to finish it within the hour. Keep to that and…
.
  1. You will need to get up to refill the glass for the following hour
  2. You will need to get up to pee!
.
I used to keep a water bottle on my desk but I found the glass method much more effective and I prefer drinking out of a glass.

Do A Jerry Steinfeld!
.
The story goes that a young comedian Brad Isaac asked Jerry Steinfeld who was a touring comic at the time, what was the best way to becoming a better comedian. Steinfeld told Brad that he writes every day and to pressure himself into sticking to it he used, what is now known as the Break The Chain method.
.
Put a calendar up and each day you write, cross out the day with a big red marker. Your only job is not to break the chain. of course the longer the chain gets the more pressure you have on yourself to not break it.
.
Daily action is what form habits so you can use this to make a new habit, of daily writing for example or to break a habit, eating biscuits with your 3 pm cuppa!
.

BTW my 11-year-old is doing well with this, he wanted to do sit ups and push ups every day and since he started tracking his habits in his bullet journal, same principle, keeping the chain, he has done it every day!
